After School Academy

Showell Elementary's After School Academy is a county regulated program. The purpose of the program is to provide a fully supervised and safe environment for students from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The program provides a wide array of academic activities that the students may choose to participate in Monday through Thursday.

Character Program
The character program at Showell Elementary School is designed to promote a positive school climate and encourage students to show respect. Our four school rules center on the value of respect. Willet Bills, Character Kid of the Month Luncheon, and Positive Office Referrals are among many ways that the school staff seeks to reinforce good character and foster a climate where learning excels.

Character Kid of the Month
Every month there is a school-wide goal associated with the school rules of respect: Yourself, Others, Learning, and Environment. Every month two students from each classroom are nominated by their teacher for demonstrating that month's focus of respect. The students receive a certificate, special button, and bumper sticker. Character Kids also get to eat lunch with Miss Shorts, Mr. Hamborsky, and/or Mr. Reid at a special table in the cafeteria during their lunch shift.

Meet Our Mascot!

Image

This is Willet, our school mascot! Willet is a shorebird who dropped out of the sky during a nor'easter. The principal found him and no one thought he'd live. She put him in the custodian's warm room, left him water and food, and he recovered! He was bored and read every book in the media area (smart), played in the gym (strong), and played in the music and art room (creative) before leaving. Willet is always around and remains in our hearts. A Willet is always willing to do his/her best at school.
